Arsenal and Chelsea Stumble as Newcastle's Winning Streak Strengthens Top-Four Push

Arsenal drop points at Brighton, Chelsea held by Crystal Palace, while Newcastle's surge continues with a crucial win at Tottenham.
A dramatic weekend in the Premier League saw Arsenal and Chelsea both fail to capitalize on opportunities, while Newcastle United extended their winning streak to five games, solidifying their bid for a top-four finish.

Arsenal’s Missed Opportunity
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion, squandering a chance to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.

Teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri gave Arsenal an early lead with a confident finish in the 16th minute.

However, Brighton fought back, with Joao Pedro converting a penalty just past the hour mark following a clash between Pedro and Arsenal defender William Saliba.

Arsenal remain in second place with 40 points, five behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment: 'We’re playing every three days.

I understand the desire to win, but we didn’t do enough today in terms of quality and consistency against a competitive side.'

Chelsea’s Struggles Continue
Chelsea’s pre-Christmas momentum has fizzled, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Cole Palmer gave Chelsea the lead in the first half, but Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized late for the hosts.

Chelsea now sit fourth with 36 points, one point behind Nottingham Forest, who face Wolverhampton on Monday.

The Blues have managed just two points from their last four matches, raising concerns about their consistency.

Newcastle’s Surge
Newcastle United continued their impressive form with a 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Anthony Gordon equalized two minutes after Dominic Solanke’s opener for Spurs, and Alexander Isak scored the winner before halftime.

Isak’s goal marks his seventh consecutive Premier League game with a goal, taking his tally to nine in that streak.

Newcastle now have 35 points, one behind Chelsea, and sit firmly in contention for a Champions League spot.

Manchester City Back in Form
Reigning champions Manchester City seem to have regained their rhythm with a dominant 4-1 victory over West Ham United.

Erling Haaland scored twice, as Pep Guardiola’s side climbed to sixth place with 34 points.

Guardiola commented, 'I am so happy and will sleep better until the next game.'

Other Results
- Bournemouth edged Everton 1-0 to maintain their push for a European spot.

- Aston Villa defeated Leicester City 2-1, handing Leicester their fifth consecutive loss.

- Brentford thrashed Southampton 5-0, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice, moving Brentford into the top half of the table.

League Outlook
With Liverpool set to host Manchester United on Sunday, they have an opportunity to extend their lead at the top to eight points.

Arsenal and Chelsea will need to regroup quickly to keep pace, while Newcastle’s momentum makes them a formidable contender for a top-four finish.

At the other end of the table, Southampton’s struggles continue, as relegation looms larger with each passing week.
