Arrest made in connection with New Year's Day murder in Wood Green

At the Future of Britain conference, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer made a nod to the past, stating that "we need three things: growth, growth, growth" to get the country back on track.

Thisechoed a similar refrain from former Labour prime minister Tony Blair, who set out his three priorities for government in 1996 with the famous words "education, education, education." With Labour leading in the polls ahead of a general election next year, Sir Keir feels the party is on the brink of ending another long period of Conservative government.

However, the circumstances now are very different from those in the 1990s, an era of sustained economic growth and optimism.

Today, the UK is on the brink of a recession, with inflation and interest rates soaring to highs not seen in decades.

The task ahead for the next government is a daunting one, and Sir Tony Blair reflected this, stating that "it's a new age of insecurity and we're not even close to match-fit." Nevertheless, Sir Keir remains optimistic and believes that growth is the key to restoring hope and opportunity in the country.

Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 28-year-old man in Wood Green on New Year's Day.

Officers were called to reports of a stabbing at 5:30am on January 1, 2022, at the junction of Finsbury Park Road and Stroud Green Road.

Upon arrival, they found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination determined that the cause of death was a single stab wound to the chest.

The victim's next of kin have been informed and a formal identification is yet to take place.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on January 12, 2022, and has been since been further arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating the murder and are appealing for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to come forward and speak to police.

"We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who saw a group of males in the area around the time of the incident." Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8345 3865 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
