APM wins Anguilla elections; Ellis L. Webster is Premier-Elect

General elections were held in Anguilla on June 29, 2020

Dr Ellis Lorenzo Webster is the Premier-Elect of Anguilla following victory for his Anguilla Progressive Movement (APM) party at the Territory’s general elections on Monday, June 29, 2020.

Dr Webster, who won his district, Island Harbour, with 493 votes, saw his party take 7 of the 11 seats in the Anguilla House of Assembly.

Anguilla United Front (AUF), led by Premier Victor F. Banks, 72, captured the remaining 4 seats.

Six seats are needed for a majority in the Anguilla HoA.

Mr Banks; however, lost his seat in Valley South to newcomer DeeAnn Kentish-Rogers, 27.

Anguilla-born Ms Rogers is a British model, beauty pageant titleholder and former athlete who was crowned as Miss Universe Great Britain 2018 and represented Great Britain at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant. She is the first black woman who represented Great Britain at a Miss Universe pageant.

Congrats from Premier Fahie

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance of the Virgin Islands, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) is one of the first regional leaders to congratulate Premier-Elect Dr Webster.

The victory for Dr Webster and his APM party is a major comeback after his party, then Anguilla United Movement (AUM) failed to win a single seat at the 2015 elections.

Up until 2019, the office of the Territory’s leader was known as Chief Minister of Anguilla, but the Anguilla Constitution (Amendment) Order 2019, which took effect on May 14, 2019, renamed the position as Premier.

The 2020 elections of Anguilla also saw the introduction of the At Large system.
