Andy Burnham has been officially named the new leader of the governing Labour Party and will become prime minister next week after Keir Starmer’s resignation. Burnham won the backing of three hundred and seventy-nine Labour MPs and has pledged to transfer more powers from London to regional leaders while proposing the nationalisation of Thames Water and expanded North Sea drilling.
