American bully XL dogs are set to be added to the list of banned dogs in England and Wales starting from 1 February next year. As of January, these dogs will also be required to be muzzled and on a lead in public, with a longer deadline for owners to ensure the dogs are neutered.
This decision comes following a series of attacks involving the breed, although some owners argue that American bully XLs can make lovable pets. The guidance is similar to that issued for the four breeds already banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
The ban does not apply to Northern Ireland or Scotland at present. Owners seeking to keep these dogs must apply to register them on the Index of Exempted Dogs, subject to a fee and strict conditions.
