The acquisition is set to bolster Alphabet's Google Cloud division, which also encompasses services such as YouTube and Android, by providing enhanced security solutions for its cloud offerings.
Founded in 2020 and based in New York, Wiz specializes in security tools designed to protect data stored in cloud environments from unauthorized access.
The acquisition is notable as it represents Google’s largest purchase in its 25-year operational history, surpassing previous high-profile acquisitions.
Wiz had previously rejected a takeover offer from Google valued at approximately $23 billion (£17.7 billion) last July, primarily due to concerns regarding potential regulatory hurdles.
The deal has attracted attention as it is expected to undergo scrutiny from the US Federal Trade Commission, particularly regarding competitive practices in the cloud services market.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, emphasized the importance of security in the cloud landscape, stating that enhanced security solutions are increasingly demanded by businesses and government entities.
He noted that the integrated strengths of Google Cloud and Wiz are poised to significantly enhance protection against cyber threats.
Assaf Rappaport, co-founder and CEO of Wiz, expressed optimism about the acquisition, highlighting a commitment to customer security across various cloud platforms.
Rappaport stated that the combined expertise and resources would enable both companies to advance their mission to prevent security breaches through innovative solutions, leveraging advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
The completion of the deal remains contingent on regulatory approval, with the anticipation that it will prompt significant discussions around compliance and competitive dynamics within the cloud computing industry.
