Alex McLeish, the former footballer and Scotland national team manager, has supported a movement advocating for the recognition of football heading as an industrial injury.

This initiative, spearheaded by Labour MSP Michael Marra, could enable former players to access social security benefits to assist with their expenses, in light of findings that link dementia to heading footballs.

McLeish, moved by the deaths of footballers like Billy McNeill and Gordon McQueen, noted the significant risks associated with the sport. He pointed to similar concerns in rugby, referenced by ex-England player Steve Thompson. He believes the campaign, which aims to assist players like him who have headed the ball extensively throughout their careers, has a strong chance of success.

Research indicates that footballers face a higher risk of dementia, a fact supported by studies including one from Glasgow University. Consequently, the Scottish Football Association banned under-12s from heading in training, while professional players in Scotland are restricted in heading activities before and after games.

The debate has prompted discussions about a total ban on heading due to dementia concerns, as suggested by Ally MacLeod's daughter. The Scottish government is planning to consult on the issue, as welfare benefits, including Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, remain under UK government control.
