A Miracle Briefly Lived: Ecuadorean Woman Declared Dead Twice

In a Tale of Hope and Tragedy, Bella Montoya was Found Alive in Her Coffin but Later Succumbs to a Stroke

Babahoyo, Ecuador – The small city of Babahoyo in Ecuador witnessed an emotional roller coaster as Bella Montoya, a 76-year-old woman, initially declared dead, was found alive by mourners at her funeral. Tragically, after a week in the hospital, she passed away for the second time, this time due to an ischemic stroke.

A Faint Knock from Beyond

On June 9, Bella Montoya was declared dead by a doctor at a hospital in Babahoyo. As per tradition, she was placed in a coffin and taken to a funeral home for the wake. Mourners gathered to pay their last respects, but to their astonishment, they heard knocking from inside the coffin. As they opened it to investigate, they found Ms. Montoya gasping for air. The gathering, which was supposed to be a somber farewell, turned into a frenzy as she was rushed back to the same hospital for emergency care.

A Second Chance Briefly Grasped

Ms. Montoya spent seven days in intensive care under “permanent surveillance,” according to a statement from Ecuador’s health ministry. Her family, initially shocked and elated by her miraculous return, hoped for a recovery. However, their hopes were dashed when the health ministry confirmed that she passed away on June 16 from an ischemic stroke.

Gilbert Barbera, Ms. Montoya’s son, spoke to a local newspaper, expressing his grief. "This time my mother really did die. My life will not be the same," he said.

A Medical Mystery: The Case of Catalepsy

Local media reported that Ms. Montoya had a condition known as catalepsy, characterized by seizures, loss of consciousness, and rigidity in the body. This condition might have contributed to the initial mistaken declaration of her death. The health ministry has since assembled a commission of experts to investigate the circumstances surrounding her case.

After her death was confirmed for the second time, Ms. Montoya was taken back to the same funeral home for her final rites and was subsequently buried at a public cemetery.

Not an Isolated Incident

Bella Montoya’s case, while astonishing, is not unique. There have been instances of individuals being erroneously declared dead, only to be found alive later. For instance, in February, an 82-year-old woman in New York State was discovered breathing in a funeral home three hours after she was pronounced dead at a nursing home.

Cases like these raise questions about medical protocols and practices, and the need for more stringent measures to avoid such heart-wrenching mistakes. The people involved and their families experience immense emotional turmoil when the line between life and death becomes blurred.

Bella Montoya’s story will serve as a reminder of the fragility and unpredictability of life, and the need for diligence in the medical community.
