A 5% increase in household energy prices has taken effect

Energy bills in England, Wales, and Scotland have seen a 5% increase, adding to the financial strain on households as the new year begins.

The regulator Ofgem's new price cap has led to a £94 annual rise for typical gas and electricity usage, with prices possibly dropping in spring.

While the government offers financial support like cost-of-living payments, the increase affects around 29 million households. For those on prepayment meters, costs are now higher, and timely support for vulnerable families is needed.

An Ofgem proposal suggests a £16 increase on typical household bills until March 2025 to assist suppliers in managing prepayment plans and debt write-offs. Charities urge for more aid with schemes for discounted tariffs and home energy efficiency.

Despite last winter's £400 government discount, many will pay more this winter. Nonetheless, there's potential good news as energy costs may significantly decrease in April, with predictions showing a possible £268 drop in annual bills.

For those struggling to pay bills, it's advised to review direct debits, arrange affordable payment plans with suppliers, and ensure all entitled benefits are claimed. Further assistance and information can be found on the MoneyHelper website.
