87-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Dies Following Assault at Birmingham New Street Station

Dorothy Chiles succumbed to injuries sustained in a November 19 attack; investigation led to the arrest of a woman in her twenties.
Dorothy Chiles, an 87-year-old great-grandmother, was photographed for the first time following her death, which has been linked to an assault at Birmingham New Street station.

Ms. Chiles was attacked around 11 am on November 19, 2024, sustaining serious injuries that included a broken hip.

After being admitted to the hospital, her condition deteriorated, and she died at her home on December 27, more than a month after the incident.

Initially, a woman in her twenties was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm related to the assault but has since been re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

She has been released on bail while investigations continue.

In a statement, the family of Ms. Chiles paid tribute to her, describing her as the 'heart and soul' of their family, known for her vibrant personality and active lifestyle.

They expressed their devastation at her loss and highlighted her numerous roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

The incident has drawn attention from authorities, and police are actively seeking a potential witness to the attack.

The man in question is described as a tall white male in his early thirties with a short goatee, last seen wearing a brown knitted beanie hat, black-framed glasses, and a black double-breasted wool coat, among other clothing.

British Transport Police Detective Inspector Ian Wright expressed condolences to the family during this difficult time and emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation.

He urged anyone with information, especially the individual matching the witness description, to come forward to assist in the inquiries.

Members of the public who may have information about the incident are encouraged to contact the British Transport Police via their hotline or through Crimestoppers to provide anonymous tips.
