Stephen-Lee McIlvenny, a 21-year-old man from west Belfast, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted on 77 counts related to the sexual abuse of three teenage boys.

The sentencing took place at Craigavon Crown Court, where McIlvenny pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including rape, sexual abuse, blackmail, and possessing indecent images.

The offences, carried out between the ages of 16 and 19, involved the exploitation of the victims, who are now dealing with the long-term psychological effects of the abuse.

During the proceedings, the court heard that McIlvenny coerced his victims into engaging in sexual acts and threatened to publish compromising images online if they did not comply.

Prosecutors noted that over 1,000 images and videos depicting the victims were discovered, with some having been shared on social media platforms such as Snapchat and the website Pornhub.

McIlvenny created a Pornhub account in March 2022, uploading videos that received significant views and generated revenue.

Judge Donna McColgan highlighted the severe impact of McIlvenny's actions, stating that he had taken full advantage of the youth and vulnerabilities of his victims.

The judge emphasized the need to recognize the significant trauma inflicted upon each boy, with one victim's mother describing the profound effects on her son’s mental health and relationships.

The victims were reported to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the abuse.

In a statement, the mother of one victim conveyed the complex stigma surrounding male sexual abuse, noting that her son experiences difficulties forming relationships and has been left with severe anxiety and depression due to the trauma endured.

She expressed a desire for increased societal support for male victims and encouraged others to come forward.

Upon release, McIlvenny will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and will also be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for a decade.

Detective Inspector Nikki Deehan, speaking outside the court, condemned McIlvenny’s actions, labeling him a 'child predator' and urged any other victims suffering in silence to seek support from law enforcement.

Deehan stated that the digital landscape has created new challenges in safeguarding young individuals from exploitation and highlighted the importance of reporting such crimes.
