18,000 Rwanda Removal Threats: UK Data Shows Most Now in Asylum System
Approximately 18,000 asylum seekers who received notices of intent to be sent to Rwanda have instead had their cases processed in the UK.
Freedom of Information data shows that around 75% of these individuals have been admitted into the asylum system since January 2021.
A notice of intent letter is issued when the Home Office declares an asylum claim inadmissible and considers removal from the UK.
The Home Office disclosed that 24,083 notices were issued between January 2021 and March 2023, revealing the number of asylum seekers being sent to Rwanda under the UK government's new policy.
This announcement comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak anticipates the Rwanda bill's final approval in parliament, with the first flight to Kigali predicted to depart within the next 10 to 12 weeks.

Prices charged by smugglers have decreased from around £4,000 to £1,000.
The Illegal Migration Act, which went into law on July 20, 2023, requires the home secretary to remove anyone entering the UK irregularly to their home country or Rwanda.
However, not all parts of the act have been implemented, and no one has been sent to Rwanda yet.
